Service to Southern Regional Science Association; Webmaster, Conference Organizer, Journal Editor
Raised the stature, Scanned 100 back issues and indexed for online databases.
Since they are not in my College, and get no "credit" for doing so, I consider it service rather than teaching.
I spend many hours each week answering questions about economics and statistics online. Some of these questions are emailed to me relating to my YouTube videos. Most are relating to my work on Reddit, in the subReddits AskEconomics (moderator), Science (moderator), AskScience (panelist), and AskStatistics.
(2011-2017) Served as co-editor of The Review of Regional Studies, Journal of the Southern Regional Science Association. I was instrumental in taking a journal that was years behind in publication to an on-time, well-respected journal. During my tenure the journal went from Q3 to Q1 on SciMago. Burkey also obtained back issues from 1971-2000 when it was a print-only journal, and digitized/catalogued every paper for online access. Burkey also got the journal indexed in DOAJ, RePEc, and other outlets.
In 2023 one of my former R students helped us secure a sponsor (TD Bank) for a Data Analytics competition that we called "Aggie Data Works". On Saturday, Feb. 24, 2023 we had 51 students compete for $6,000 in prize money. We are doing it again on Feb. 24th, 2024! Originally (I think) it was my idea, but the student (James Harrington) did 90% of the work, leaving me to simply judge the resulting projects.
2005-2018 Served as Designated Representative for ICPSR for North Carolina A&T. I started doing this because our membership had lapsed, so I beat the bushes every year to raise money from various deans and department heads to pay the yearly fees. In 2018 the Library took over funding and managing the ICPSR membership.
Served as a Mentor for Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program (Reginald Wilkerson). Research Topic: Social and Racial Differences in the Utilization of Financial Services, 2003.
Starting in 2002, I began helping Charlie Becker (now at Duke) recruit students for the AEA Summer Minority Graduate Prep Program when it was at University of Colorado, Denver (2001-2003). When the program moved to Duke University (2004-2007), I participated in many events, continued mailing flyers to universities, and served as a judge for their research presentations. I continued involvement with the program in an official capacity while it was a UC-Santa Barbara (2008-2010). Since then I have only recruited students from A&T to go to the program, including Amaze Lusompa (now at Kansas City Fed), Nassir Holden (Philadelphia Fed), and Jasmine Amaniampong and Sullivan Anderson (current undergraduates at A&T).
Soon after coming to A&T, I revived a long-inactive Brown Bag seminar for faculty to present and discuss their research. I let this effort from 2001- 2013. Burkey hosted 60 brown bag seminars over this time period. In addition to A&T faculty, several A&T students and many outside speakers were recruited. Outside speakers included Charlie Becker (Duke), Sylvia Secchi (Southern Illinois University), Mike Munger (Duke), June Arunga (African advocate for free markets and trade, entrepreneur with M-PESA), William Jackson (Atlanta Fed), Doug Steigerwald (UC Santa Barbara), and others.
In addition to organizing presentations by others, Burkey regularly presents to student/faculty groups. Various topics have included a Crash Course in R, Free / Low Cost tools for making YouTube videos, presenting highlights of Economics Nobel Laureates (e.g., John Nash, Paul Krugman, Thomas Schelling).
Created a Law & Economics Degree program to serve the many Economics majors interested in going to Law School. He has tutored students in the LSAT, developed a course in Law & Economics, and advised many students who go on to law school. I am the advisor for all of the Econ Pre-Law majors.
Founding advisor for A&T's chapter of National Black Law Student Association (NBLSA).
I serve the community by participating in public school events (e.g., Career Day), serving as Treasurer of the Garden Grove Shot Shapers (Disc Golf Club), serving as Vice President of my Homeowners' Association, and helping my wife with two charities she works with: BackPack Beginnings (providing food and other resources to needy schoolchildren) and Family Support Network (offering help to parents of children with special needs).
Though the Deese College of Business' only graduate programs are the MBA and MAcc, Burkey has served on several MA and Ph.D. committees in other colleges on campus and other universities. These are primarily the Energy and Environmental Systems program and the Computational Science and Engineering program. Burkey chaired one Ph.D. student's committee, meeting with her on weekends for two years because she had small children at home, and could only meet when her husband could watch the children.
